At the Black Hat USA conference, Sysdig today announced it has extended the capabilities of Sysdig Secure to include runtime profiling and anomaly detection enabled by machine learning algorithms with Kubernetes environments. At the same time, Sysdig unveiled Falco Rule Builder, a more flexible user interface (UI) for creating runtime security policies, which integrates tightly with Sysdig Secure.

The FFmpeg project released a new major version of their open-source and cross-platform multimedia framework used by numerous games and applications, FFmpeg 4.2. Dubbed "Ada," the FFMpeg 4.2 series introduces some exciting new features and improvements, among which we can mention support for decoding AV1 files via the libdav1d library, support for ARIB STD-B24 caption (profiles A and C) based on the libaribb24 library, and support for decoding HEVC 4:4:4 content in nvdec and cuviddec.

A new variant of the Spectre (Variant 1) side-channel vulnerability has been discovered that affects modern Intel CPUs which leverage speculative-execution, and some AMD processors as well, Microsoft and Red Hat warn. Identified as CVE-2019-1125, the vulnerability could allow unprivileged local attackers to access sensitive information stored in the operating system privileged kernel memory, including passwords, tokens, and encryption keys, that would otherwise be inaccessible. Windows Terminal Preview v0.3 has been published to the Microsoft Store. The very-preview code has hit 0.3, and we took a look at version 0.3.2142.0, which can currently be found in the otherwise moribund Microsoft Store. One of the assumptions made about key drivers Kubernetes adoption is that organizations are trying to accelerate the rate at which software is built by embracing microservices based on containers. However, a survey of 130 attendees of three recent container conferences published by Replex, a provider of governance and cost management tools for Kubernetes, finds the top two drivers of Kubernetes adoption are improving scalability (61%) and resource utilization (46%), followed by a desire to adopt a cloud-native stack (37%) and shortening development and deployment times (42%).

HPE has gobbled BlueData, purveyor of the EPIC Big Data-as-a-service software that can run large-scale distributed analytics and machine learning workloads in Docker containers. The business was founded in 2012 by CEO Kumar Sreekanti and chief architect Tom Phelan, and has taken in just $39m in funding. There have been three rounds; a $4m A-round in 2013, a fast $15m B-round from an Ignition Partners-led group in later 2013 and a $20m investment led by Intel Capital in 2015, with Dell Technologies Capital participation.

Earlier this year, Huawei unveiled its Android compiler known as Ark compiler to speed up the code execution. It aims to improve the overall Android system efficiency by making App compilation more fluent. As announced earlier, the Huawei has finally opened the Ark Compiler for public. Huawei’s idea behind making it open-source is to nourish the development ecosystem, which can play a significant role in the growth of Huawei’s upcoming OS.

GNOME and KDE are coming together to sponsor the Linux App Summit (LAS) 2019 in Barcelona from November 12th to 15th, 2019. This isn't the first time the two rival Linux desktop groups have come together, but it has been a decade since they've joined forces to run a conference together. Post the completion of Red Hat acquisition, IBM has started building bridges between the product and services of the two companies. IBM has reengineered its software portfolio to now be "cloud-native and optimized to run on Red Hat OpenShift." This will allow enterprises to build "mission-critical" apps once and "run them on all leading public clouds, including AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, Alibaba and IBM Cloud and on private clouds," according to the announcement.

GitLab is one of the most innovative tech companies that’s disrupting the industry. First and foremost, it’s an open-source company that’s making Linus Torvald’s Git usable for everyone by offering it as a project and commercializing it as a product. But what’s really unique about GitLab is the way it runs the business. It’s a fully remote company with no headquarters. It has employees in 50 different countries and they work when they feel like working, from home.

The game distribution company, Steam, has proposed changes to the Linux kernel to gain access to extra core functionality they need to improve performance of gaming on Linux. Steam recently released the first build of Proton 4.11, a WINE based tool that can run Windows games on Linux. They observed that the performance can be significantly improved if the proposed changes are made to the kernel.

Smarter Grid Solutions (SGS) has published its first open source project today, an OpenFMB device simulator, which it hopes will accelerate the development, testing and adoption of distributed energy resources (DERs) that use the OpenFMB messaging and data model. Interoperability framework OpenFMB was developed in response to the proliferation of DERs, such as wind and solar power, and the resulting, increasingly-critical need for greater cohesion and information sharing among these systems.

Collabora today announced a new open-source project that promises to enable Linux-based desktop environments and window managers to be aware of VR (virtual reality). Sponsored by Valve, the xrdesktop project is developed by Collabora and designed to integrate into existing desktop environments like KDE and GNOME, making them running in virtual reality (VR) runtimes. It does that by rendering windows in 3D space, allowing users to manipulate them with VR controllers and headsets.

Google this week said it would for the first time natively support VMware workloads in its Cloud service, giving customers more options for deploying enterprise applications. The hybrid cloud service called Google Cloud VMware Solution by CloudSimple will use VMware software-defined data center (SDCC) technologies including VMware vSphere, NSX and vSAN software deployed on a platform administered by CloudSimple for GCP. Amazon, Google, Microsoft And IBM Renew Pledge To Support Interoperability And Advance Open StandardsThe six companies and competitors—Amazon, Google, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle and Salesforce— announced a renewed commitment to interoperability at the CMS Blue Button 2.0 Developer Conference on Tuesday afternoon. The companies also are throwing their sizable weight behind recent interoperability proposed rules from the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Microsoft has acquired BlueTalon, a start-up whose software can prevent people from accessing certain high-value data that companies keep. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. BlueTalon’s technology works with a variety of systems for storing data, including Hadoop, Spark and PostgreSQL. The software lets people run queries on sensitive data to make observations, while not revealing the actual underlying information. (Source: CNBC)
